With a current world estimated population of 7.8 billion, there are approximately 4.79 billion people worldwide who have access to and use the internet frequently. That means that 61.4% of the world population uses the internet. From the year 2000 to 2019, the usage of the internet increased by 1,157%.
While the developed world is accustomed to high-speed internet access, only 48% of the world population has used the internet in the last 3 months. The disparities are significant: 81% of the EU population is using the internet, compared to only 22% in Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 2017).
