We do more on the internet than just visiting webpages with a browser. Both your computer and your phone probably have dozens of apps installed that uses the internet somehow. What about those? Sadly, this is a bit more opaque. By default the owner of the network can read (and modify) everything you send or receive over it. The "upstream" surveillance program, as it was called, enables NSA to search the international online activity of Americans. The program gave NSA the ability to scrutinize anyone who sends emails abroad or browses a website hosted outside the U.S. [source: Gorski and Toomey ]. Does the government monitor internet searches? Of course, they do! Between Edward Snowden and WikiLeaks, we know that the government not only monitors practically all online activity, but they also store it in permanent records.

Jan 30, 2008 · Aside from things like this, they won't (without probably cause) monitor your personal web traffic from a private network. On a government network however, we monitor everything. We have the capability (If authorized) to look at every email, instant message or pretty much anything you do, and we can do it in live time too. Does anyone know whether the background check involves a search into one's internet usage (i.e. do the investigators obtain info from Internet Service Providers and what not)? I don't have anything to hide, but I am curious and I haven't seen this issue addressed on this board.
