My conclusion is that Windows 7 has a serious problem that is related to sleep. After reviewing many, many forums from other people (there are a lot of us) having the same problems, I found that someone was able to set the computer to hibernate instead of sleep and not experience the awful WMC degradation issues associated with sleeping.
